It’s always great to come to new places and have new experiences like this
Charl Schwartzel finished in the red numbers to make a steady start to the ISPS Handa Perth International.
Schwartzel carded a one under par 71 to sit inside the top 30 at Lake Karrinyup Country Club.
It was a topsy-turvy round for the South African, who made four birdies in total.
"I was a bit disappointed with my round," said Schwartzel, who is joined in tied 29th by David Howell. "I had a good run going at the beginning of the day but slipped a bit. One under par isn’t too bad, though."
Following his round, the 2011 Masters champion was introduced to an animal synonomous with Australia, a koala bear named Sunshine.
"I love animals and so it is nice when you get an opportunity to hold a koala," said Schwartzel. "He’s a bit smaller than the animals we have back at home. It’s always great to come to new places and have new experiences like this.
"I’ve always loved Australia. It is my first time to Perth and I’ve really enjoyed myself so far."
Rika Batibasaga is one over, while Matthew Baldwin is one shot behind him.
