There’s a great sporting heritage there, and the Australian people are mad about their sport

- Charl Schwartzel

Charl Schwartzel headlines the inaugural edition of the ISPS Handa Perth International - the most lucrative Australian tournament of the year - this week.

Schwartzel goes in search of his eighth European Tour title at Lake Karrinyup Country Club on Thursday, where he is joined by ISM stablemates Scott Arnold, Rika Batibasaga, Matthew Baldwin, Danny Denison, Tommy Fleetwood, David Howell and James Kingston.

The 2011 Masters Champion is buoyed by his performance at the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final last week, where he defeated Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, the world’s top two ranked players, in successive days.

"I’m really looking forward to getting down to Perth, because my game feels like it’s very close to getting back to a high level," said the South African. "I’ve had a bit of a strange year, because I’ve been playing pretty well but the results just haven’t really come.

"But I played very well in Turkey last week, and to get to the semi-finals against eight of the best players in the world was very satisfying.

"I managed to beat Rory and Tiger, and any time you manage to take down the best two players in the world, then you are going to take a lot of confidence from that. So hopefully I can carry that form into this week and get an even better result."

Schwartzel was asked about playing down under.

"Australia is a great country, and a great place to play golf," he said. "There’s a great sporting heritage there, and the Australian people are mad about their sport – they are almost as good as South Africa!"

Elsewhere, Darren Clarke and Simon Dyson play in the World Celebrity Pro-Am at the Mission Hills Resort, while Nick Dougherty and Ross McGowan compete at US PGA Tour School.

Charlie Ford, Alexandre Kaleka, Espen Kofstad, Matthew Nixon, Peter Uihlein and Simon Wakefield are in action at the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Challenge. Steven and Tyrone Ferreira, Attie Schwartzel and Allan Versfeld are at BMG.
