Tom turned professional in December 2010 after an excellent amateur career during which he won the Italian Amateur in 2009 when he beat local favourite Matteo Manassero in the final and he then went on to represent England in 2009 and 2010.

Tom became a member of the England U21 squad in the year 2007 and progressed up to the A squad the following year and then to the Elite squad in 2009.

In 2011 he qualified for the 140th Open Championship when he finished tied 2nd in the Local Qualifying event at Prince's.
